Linksfield School by Hubo Designs
If you’re a regular VISI reader, you may recognise the work of Asher Marcus and his Hubo Studio crew from the imaginative, colourful interiors they did for the Tshepo Jeans store in Hyde Park and the King David School library in Sandton.
The two new spaces on these pages, also for a King David School – The Studios design studio and robotics centre, and The Yards art and drama centre – are all about a progressive educational philosophy that respects and empowers learners, awakening curiosity and sustaining the senses.

Sandton School by Hubo Designs
Usually a library is a space for books,” says an enthusiastic Asher Marcus of Hubo Studio, “but we transformed the library into a space for readers.”
He’s talking about the new Elements Library located at King David School in Sandton, Johannesburg – a space that also serves as a media centre and teaching space. “We were approached by a client with a long legacy around books,” says Asher.
“As an avid reader, I wanted to understand how a space could facilitate reading.”
Asher and his team have a keen interest in interior design, and a passion for moulding spaces within the corporate and NGO landscapes.

Linskfield Shul at King David School
The Linksfield Shul and Community Centre is a project engaging an existing synagogue and community space, both of which are close to the heart of the practice.
The project began with an inspired vision of what the experience of the space could become; a singular transformation that catalysed and informed the rest of the renovation and rebuild.

A Tale of Two
The story begins in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. What began as a grand vision for a single structure with a very healthy budget, evolved into a tale of pragmatic adaptation, birthing two distinct projects:
The Yards and The Studios. Originally intended as a combined endeavor, the constraints imposed by the pandemic led to a significant scaling back, prompting workshops to split the project into two.

Safe Spaces
Under the creative eye of Asher Marcus, a young yet forward-thinking architect, and the encouragement of Rabbi Levi Avtzon, a Chabad shaliach and senior rabbi at the Linksfield Hebrew Congregation, the shul embarked on a project to reinvent the space and vision for the 21st century.
The renewed sanctuary, a brand-new education and youth center, plus a state-of-the-art mikveh, have given fresh energy to this spiritually growing community.
